Occitanista - Massilia Sound System (Vinyl)
At last, a previously unreleased version of the album on single 33T vinyl! To celebrate Massilia's 40th anniversary, Manivette Records is reissuing four of their albums on vinyl, with new tracklists and remastered for the occasion.
The Marseilles "troubamuffins" invite you to their little neighborhood party. More open than their previous albums, this eighth opus is also more festive and more committed. Influenced by Jamaican dub, their raggamuffin made in Marseille, otherwise known as "trobamoffin", reappropriates the open-minded values of Occitan civilization.
Manivette Records, Baco Distribution.
Original album published in 2002.
The Occitanista album is available on vinyl and CD digipack.
The band:
Massilia Sound System celebrates as many years marked by a desire to confront points of view, bring people together and mix styles. Massilia Sound System sings of Marseille, the party, love, but also its anger and struggles. Singing in French and Occitan, the group uses these two assets as multiple possibilities. The langue d'oc, almost a thousand years old, is practiced not as a regionalist confinement, but as a genuine space of freedom, a creative tool with infinite possibilities, just as reggae music is, so we've come full circle. In these troubled times of division, community withdrawal and fear, Massilia Sound System once again aims, beyond the music and festive spirit it naturally exudes, to have a function, to be like a tool in the service of a cause (or several): that of awareness, not only political, but also of living together, tolerance and openness to the world, like their city, "Massilia", a port that has welcomed all the cultures of the Mediterranean and beyond for over 2600 years.
Marseille, Massilia, a city, a symbol, a struggle, a resistance, a hope, a look, a love. It's all these things at once. The Massilia Sound System is also all of these things combined in one group: 3 MCs to take the microphone, with 3 voices, 3 very distinct sensibilities (each of which can also be found in their parallel projects): Papet J (aka Jali), Gari Grèu and Moussu T (aka Tatou), accompanied by talented musicians: DJ Kayalik on turntables, Blu on electric guitar and Janvié on keyboards. Massilia Sound System is the sound of Marseille! It's sunny and engrossing, loud and smells of aniseed... Si leva mai la cançon, si tout va mal, que tout semble perdu, la chanson se lèvera encore... And Massilia will be there to sing it.
