The Occitan cross (known as Toulouse or Forcalquier) has become today the emblem of all Occitania.
The "Occitan" cross is in fact the derivative of the coats of arms of the counts of Toulouse: of geules with the cross emptied, keyed and pommetée of gold. This flag is used to represent the Occitan language and culture, or more generally as a regional emblem. The motif of the cross of pays d'oc is used by many local authorities Midi-Pyrénées, Languedoc-Roussillon (Occitanie) and Hautes-Alpes.
In the Occitan valleys of Italy, in accordance with Law 482-99 concerning linguistic minorities, many municipalities organize a ceremony around the laying of the Occitan flag on the official buildings. A text is read in Occitan and Italian, explaining the reasons for the ceremony and then the flag is hoisted to the sound of "Se Canta".
