Victor CONRARD, Journal d’un déporté en Algérie après le coup d’état du 2 décembre 1851

(8 juin 1852 - 26 juillet 1853) suivi de l’étude de Fernand RUDE « Mourir à Douéra ».

Diary of a deportee in Algeria after the coup d'état of December 2, 1851 (June 8, 1852 - July 26, 1853) followed by Fernand RUDE's study "Mourir à Douéra" (Dying in Douéra).

More than 3,000 Republicans were deported to Algeria for their resistance to the coup d'état of December 2, 1851, led by President Louis Napoléon Bonaparte.
At a time when attempts are multiplying to rehabilitate the man who put the Second Republic to death, the Association 1851 pour la Mémoire des Résistances Républicaines has chosen to publish an unpublished document, the diary of one of his victims, Victor Conrad, who was deported to Douéra. Very few notebooks by deportees in Algeria have survived.
This collection is certainly the most extensive. It gives us a detailed, day-by-day account of the conditions of detention at Douéra. What's more, as a scrupulous "historian", as was his stated ambition, Victor Conrad collected various accounts from his prison, other camps and fortresses in Algeria and French Guiana, as well as a few episodes from the December resistance.
His gifts as an almost naturalistic observer and his sometimes devastating sense of humor make him an extraordinary witness.
The strength and constancy of his ideas, expressed and applied in his daily practice, take the place of a conception of the fight for the Republic.

Published by the Association 1851 pour la mémoire des Résistances républicaine.
