Petit dictionnaire provençal-français - Emil Levy (1909)
Facsimile reprint with review by Antoine Thomas.
Facsimile copy in 33% larger format of the latest edition by Carl Winter, Heidelberg, 1997.
Based on the work of the great German Romanist, this Petit dictionnaire provençal-français makes the vocabulary found in old texts accessible to all, and indicates possible variants. An excellent tool.
"It's rare for a pocket-sized bilingual dictionary to be written by an internationally renowned scholar - and even rarer for it to be written by the world's foremost connoisseur of the lexicon of the source language! Such was the case, however, with Emil Levy's Petit dictionnaire provençal-français, colloquially known as “le Petit Levy”, abbreviated to LvP by the von Wartburg school (in PD by others). Published in 1909 in Meyer-Lübke's prestigious Sammlung romanischer Elementar- und Handbücher (Hamburg, Carl Winter), the work is now being reprinted once again, thanks to a welcome initiative by Marjolaine Raguin and Marc Arabyan."
In the title of the Petit dictionnaire, Provençal means “langue d'oc of the Middle Ages, ancient Occitan”, according to a pars pro toto usage now threatened with obsolescence in France. Levy's Provençal encompasses, on an equal footing, all varieties of Occitan stricto sensu, as well as Gascon...". (Extract from Jean-Pierre Chambon's foreword).
Afterword: Antoine Thomas, Foreword: Jean-Pierre Chambon.
