Dictionnaire Français-Occitan, Provençal - Robert ROURRET

Our dictionary, based on the Provençal dialect, but which can be used by users of other dialects (most of the vocabulary is common), is an attempt to fill a current gap: the absence of any French-Provençal dictionary in the classical spelling (the so-called “Occitan” spelling, whose main restorer was Louis Alibert). The only instruments available are the few existing French-occitan lexicons or dictionaries based on Languedoc speakers (which obliges the Provençal user to make an effort to adapt) and the French-Provençal section of Xavier de Fourvières' “Pichot Trésor”, which has a number of major drawbacks: a spelling (known as “naistra. tienne"), which is far too closely copied from French (imagine English or German written according to the French graphic system); the inadequacy of the modern vocabulary (it dates from 1902); and the priority given to the Rhodanian sub-dialect (the Félibrige considers this sub-dialect, as did Frédéric Mistral, to have been written in this language).

We have chosen to use the traditional (autochthonous) spelling of the langue d'oc, tried to introduce the necessary modern vocabulary, and given an important place to the other sub-dialects. We consider all Provençal sub-dialects to be on an equal footing: none of them is superior to the others in terms of mastery; there is no “true” Provençal against which the other dialects are merely patois; all Provençal dialects are authentic Provençal, and therefore authentic Occitan (the author wishes to point out that he is originally from Rhodanian Provence and speaks Rhodanian).
