Le Patois du Queyras - Joseph Mathieu

Occitan-French and French-occitan lexicon.

Joseph Mathieu was born in 1929 in Saint-Véran in a family of peasants, and as he says on his website (patoisqueyras.free.fr), the patois, he stuck with the milk of his mother. If the patois queyrassin remains the language of use of the parents, they nevertheless speak French to their children. Joseph is part of this last generation who has been the repository of all local regional and local languages. The postwar period would bring the great turning point of modernity and the Queyras patois was going to disappear as the mule would be replaced by the tractor. Joseph meanwhile became a teacher and began his career in Algeria, a country he learned to love, but he must leave at independence. Chance assignments then sends him to Loire-Atlantique where he continues his career. Joseph, however, remains viscerally attached to the Queyras he runs most paths and climbs almost every peak during the holidays. But the Queyras, it is for him much more than magnificent sites and a sky so deep blue, the Queyras, it is a history, a culture, those of all the generations which, one after the other, clung The stubbornness of the climate, the altitude, the isolation and, despite everything, kept villages so far away from the urban centers alive, persistently opposed the sometimes ungrateful slopes of their mountains.

How to understand, how to try to transmit this culture without going through the language, the patois? How to designate the different parts of a traditional house in Saint-Véran without using their original names? To translate lobio simply by balcony, or fougagno by kitchen does not account for the specificity of the Saint-Vérannais habitat. The sounds of the patois also resonate in place names and contribute to their identity: Sagnières, Rouchas Frach to name but two. Joseph, once retired, then offers courses in patois.
