Histoire sociale des langues de France
(Social history of the languages of France) direction by Georg Kremnitz, with the help of Fañch Broudic and the HSLF collective.
France discovers its multilingualism. Indeed, dozens of languages other than French are spoken on its territory. A new perception of this linguistic reality has emerged at the political, administrative and public levels over the past fifteen years. Research on the languages of France and on languages in France has simultaneously progressed considerably. But it lacked a general state of affairs and a synthesis. While several social stories of languages have been published, this one is the first for all languages spoken in one country, France. This book deals with the history of the communication of a large number of languages or varieties which, at different times, have come into contact with French. It takes into account both the regional or minority languages of the Aboriginal and Overseas Territories and those of the old or recent immigration, not to mention the French sign language.
Bringing a considerable amount of information on an unknown aspect of French society, this innovative story, encyclopaedic by nature, is going to constitute a reference work.
The objective of the collective is to offer for the first time to the specialists of the language and communication sciences and to the motivated French-speaking public a vision as complete as possible of the history of the communication in this country, by integrating aspects which in general are not considered as much as necessary. The project wants to innovate from the point of view of both theory and method. As no other comparable company has been implemented so far, it could serve as a model. The book would like to stress that the language sciences must be much more interested than in the past in the phenomena of communication. The priority given to them could have positive consequences for historical linguistics, which still refuse to take them into account enough, but it could also have an influence on current linguistic theories, which all too often omit to integrate them. in their approach.
It is addressed, certainly, to the specialists of the sciences of the language, but also to a large public which aspires today to better know the history and the current situation of the languages of France, which it is often question in the actuality. All will discover here the concepts and data that are needed to better understand the evolution of forms of communication in these languages of France.
