Explanation of street and square names in Le Val (Var)

A resident of Le Val for 25 years, Reinat Toscano has dedicated a book to street signs. In this one, he goes back in time and explains why streets and lanes are named as they are.

"Who hasn't wondered, on seeing the name of a street or square, what it means? Of course, when it's Rue Victor Hugo or Place du 8 Mai 1945, that's no problem. But in other cases, for lesser-known people or for names that may have changed over the centuries, it can be interesting to have an explanation.
It can also be a good idea to give the old names, which bear witness to the evolution of the village."

In this book, which the author wrote with the help of the students of the Occitan course given at Le Val for many years as part of the activities of the Institut d'Études Occitanes, the Provençal equivalent of each name is also given.

Reinat TOSCANO was born in Nice in 1959. Doctor in Occitan Studies, teacher of Italian and Occitan, he worked in various establishments in Limousin and Provence, as well as at the University of Nice, before settling in Centre-Var, where he is also secretary of the Institute of Occitan Studies.
