Apprendre l’occitan, Promouvoir le patrimoine - Enquête et réflexions sur l'action des écoles Calandretas dans trois villes d'Occitanie - Gregoire Andreo Raynaud
The Calandretas are community schools founded in Pau in 1979, which teach the Occitan language using immersive methods borrowed from C. Freinet and Pédagogie Institutionnelle. Based on an ethnographic study carried out in three towns in the Occitanie region, the author analyzes the impact of this language policy from below on the social situation of the Occitan language and culture in these territories, more than 40 years after their creation.
This three-year fieldwork led the author to meet over a hundred players: students and former students, parents, teachers, associations and politicians involved in the Occitan question. Using data from a variety of approaches, the book describes how these schools/associations positively influence practices and representations of the Occitan language and culture, but also highlights the factors limiting the success of these objectives. The author also invites wider reflection on the use of the term heritage to categorize Occitan language and culture.
