Toponymie de Signes - Gérard Tautil
Un Territoire et des Hommes. Le trésor des noms de lieux d'un village provençal.
(Toponymy of Signes - A Territory and Mens. The treasure of the names of places of a village in Provence).
The study of place names in the Pays d'Oc is an important step in linguistic and cultural reappropriation. The knowledge of the toponyms signois exceeds the framework of the commune. Toponymy poses a fundamental question: what do these juxtaposed names mean in maps and cadastral documents if they are not related to the concrete life of village or urban communities? What meaning, other than mysterious, folkloric or falsely evident, may have names of places such as Belincent, Cancerilles, Cante Cigale, Carnaval, Chabran, Croupatières, Mare Caïre, Maramouyé, Gapeau, Garagaï du Signoret, Jas de Laure, Latay, Panerolle , Pou de Vèze, Recessed Wells, Sartan's Tail, Brugedor's Ragage, Roudeliere, Samile du Tuèi, Signs, Suy or Siou Blanc, Uyé des Lèques, Vanade, Ventadour, Viole? ...
The toponymy is a real deployment of history, it gives meaning to our places of life. Not only for the premises but also for the Provençaux of yesterday and today. Part of ourselves, it makes us discover the country behind the landscape and makes us country. This rigorous work makes us enter the human sciences through a door too long ignored in anthropology. The knowledge of real Provence, in perspective with the Occitan ensemble, finds a new light.

Preface by Alain Barthélémy-Vigouroux:
"Cet ouvrage présente le double avantage d'un travail d'une précision et d'une exactitude indépassables replacé dans une vue d'ensemble, non seulement de la toponymie provençale et plus globalement occitane, mais encore d'un tableau historique de l'évolution linguistique dans laquelle se déroulent la création et la transformation des noms de lieux."
Alain Barthélemy-Vigouroux (Inspecteur d'Académie honoraire, Secrétaire de l'Association pour l'Enseignement de la Langue d'Oc).
Translation in english: "This work presents the double advantage of a work of precision and accuracy that can not be surpassed, repositioned in an overall view, not only of Provencal toponymy and more generally Occitan, but also of a historical picture of the" Linguistic evolution in which the creation and transformation of place names takes place."
Alain Barthélemy-Vigouroux (Honorary Academy Inspector, Secretary of the Association for the Teaching of the Language of Oc).
