The texts presented in this book are taken from the whole of Mistral's work. They belong to various registers of language, given the variety of their provenance: poetic works, prose extracts, articles borrowed from the newspaper L'Aiòli or facetious articles taken from the Armana prouvençau.

Mistral, in and through his work, claims the right for the Provençals to express themselves in their own language. And what words does he choose to illustrate his point? Terms related to cooking: pan (bread), tapeno (capers), ferigoulo (thyme), bon-rible (wild mint), embut (funnel), dourgo (jug)...

The index of Provençal gastronomy brings together all the entries related to Provençal cuisine: the various ingredients (vegetables, fruits, spices, drinks, cakes, etc.), the dishes, the utensils, the furniture, the various practices, the historical or geographical origin of various products.

La taulo e l'oustau clearly shows the links between Mistral's literary work and daily life. The Contes gourmands express the taste of a Félibre who celebrates the Provençal table.


All the texts in this collection are taken from Frédéric Mistral's works, prose, poetry or articles, and are related to culinary traditions, meals, harvests, Provençal products and specialties. They come mainly from the Armana prouvençau, the newspaper L'Aiòli, and Memòri e raconte, the autobiographical account of the great Provencal writer. At the end of the book, a Lipo-det, Index de gastromonie provençale, gives all the entries of the dictionary Lou Tresor dóu Felibrige related to food.
