Òbra poetica - Oeuvre poètique de 1954 à 1960 - Sergi Bec

A collection of Provençal poetry.

The poetic career of Serge Bec, born in 1933, spans more than fifty years and includes at least sixteen collections. It is striking for its fidelity to a language and its remarkable unity, its coherence without fracture. In the wake of surrealism, it marks a break with the poetry of the félibres.

This work brings together in a single volume his first four collections, which are no longer available: Li Graio negro / Les Corneilles noires (1954), Cants de l'estre fòu / Chants de l'être fou (1957), Miegterrana / Méditerranée (1957), Memòria de la carn, seguit de Auba / Memoire de la chair, suivi de Aube (1959-1960).

Serge Bec has built his poetic universe on three instances: the omnipresent I of the poet, the tu of the woman he loves, and the third person, the country, the Lubéron. These lyrical words are almost always addressed to the same female addressee, Anne; the woman passionately loved, the dòmna of the troubadours. Her presence pervades the work, and she is both the object of passion and the ideal confidante, who receives the oblation of the word and is its source. Poet, woman and country form a kind of symbiotic triad.

This profoundly human poetry exalts a relationship with the world based on wonder and love for people and nature. Her inexhaustibly inventive lyricism expresses both passion for the woman she loves and revolt against injustice.

The authour:

Sergi Bec is undoubtedly one of the most important living Occitan poets. Born in Cavaillon in 1933, he began writing in Provençal at an early age. After becoming a journalist in Marseille, then deputy director of the Parc Naturel Régional du Lubéron, he continued to write poems in his chosen language, using both Mistralian and classical spellings, both out of a spirit of conciliation and indifference to systems. Numerous literary awards followed, including the Prix Aubanel, the Prix Antigone awarded by the city of Montpellier and the Prix Provence.
In 1954, at the age of 21, he began writing poetry with his first collection Li Graio Negro. His poetic career thus spans more than fifty years, with at least sixteen collections published by a wide range of publishers. It is striking for its fidelity to a language and its remarkable unity, its coherence without fracture. In the surge of suréalisme, it marks a break with the poetry of the félibres.
Serge Bec has built his poetic universe on three instances: the I of the poet, the tu of the woman he loves, and the third person, the country. The I is omnipresent. Serge Bec's poetry is lyrical. With all the possible inflections of this genre, it expresses the moods, sensations and feelings of the speaker-poet.
