In the 18th century, poetry in the Occitan language was part of everyday life. It is practiced in popular circles, on the occasion of festivities, but also within the cultured elite, in environments nevertheless acquired to the mastery of French. This anthology, the first of its kind for this still unknown period of Occitan literary history, contains 80 texts, poems or extracts of poems, translated, presented and annotated. It makes it possible to measure the vitality and the diversity of a poetic creation which is part of the vast current of the European rococo. A light spirit, a subtle humor, a mixture of genres, an indefinable grace, characterize a writing which, at the same time, by taking a new look at the reality of work and of the days and by accepting forms borrowed from ambient orality, Proof of a profound originality.

The author:

Jean-François Courouau is a lecturer authorized to conduct research in Modern Occitan literature at Toulouse-Jean Jaurès University. He recently directed the first synthesis devoted to creation in the Occitan language in the 18th century, in which he was particularly interested in the rich and unknown - Occitan poetic production of the Enlightenment.

De toutei lei plezirs de la vido civilo,
Trobi ren de tant doulx que la counversacien.
Pourveu que sié libro et tranquilo,
Et leis actours d'egualo proufessien :
Que se trate d'uno matiero,

De tous les plaisirs de la vie en société, je ne connais rien de plus doux que la conversation. Pourvu qu'elle soit libre et tranquille, et les acteurs d'égale profession ; qu'il s'y traite d'une matière non pas difficile au point qu'un seul parmi tous en puisse décider, mais que chacun, parlant à son tour, dise son sentiment séparément, s'il juge sa pensée claire, et que personne ne se prenne au sérieux : la gaieté tient les esprits en alerte.
Quelque bon conte sur le tapis, voilà ce que je crois le mieux, comme nous fîmes un jour dans une certaine bastide où nous nous retrouvâmes, toute une troupe choisie d'amies et d'amis, tous gais et bien disposés à dire chacun de bons mots.
