Marcela Delpastre was an Occitan- and French-language author from Limousin. She was born on September 2, 1925 and died on February 6, 1998. She is known in non-Occitan-speaking France as Marcelle Delpastre.
Marcelle Delpastre (1925-1998) spent her life in the farm where she was born, in Germont, commune of Chamberte, in Limousin, between working the land and writing. Her goal was to make her work, essentially poetic.
After boarding school in Brive and the baccalaureate, she did a year of Arts Déco in Limoges. Despite her interest in this training, she did not pursue it. She remained on the farm, where, over the years, and as the family members disappeared, one by one, she found herself in charge of the entire property with the status of family helper.
Coming from a traditional peasant family, she knew and practiced the skills, being and saying inherited from centuries of pagan civilization. Conscious of being a recipient of this culture, she worked as an ethnographer to preserve, for lack of transmission, a way of life she knew would soon come to an end. She was not content to describe, but gave the deep meaning of thousand-year-old practices. She was always ready to explain, to tell tales, to sing.
The strongest thing in her life, what kept her until she lived only for it, was poetry. Poetry, with which she confronted herself, clashed, with which she grabbed herself, in a permanent hand-to-hand combat. Poetry, in Occitan and in French, not in translation but as it came, which is for Marcelle an expression of the being in the world in a cosmogonic dimension. Because, for her, the poet is an instrument in the hands of poetry, a passer of the conscience of the world.
The delpastrian work also contains the Memoirs, long account not only of its life, but glance often distanced on the events, the world, the society, poetic pen also which gives to see as a picture.
A woman of the earth who mingled with writing, she was often scorned by her neighbors as well as by the media, considered with condescension. Her sense of derision and her laughter of clarine saved her from this wound.
She died paralyzed in the bed where her mother had given birth, where her father and grandmother died. The work gives voice to a totally original voice in the writing of the Oc, with an intensity and density equal to the destiny of a woman-poet who sacrificed herself to her.
